Do It Yourself “Podcasting”

A recent issue of The Orange county Register business section provided the means of doing “Podcasting” on the cheap. The requirements were, a headset or microphone and a recording device such as a computer with internet access.

To create the Podcast there are numerous free programs available on the internet, such as Audacity. This is an open source software for recording and editing sounds. If you want to go to the next level and produce professional quality audio to your podcast then maybe a product by MixMeister called Propaganda would be the way to go. This product is available at a price of $49.95 and at this moment in time also offers a free 90 days of podcast hosting. It also offers a mirage of features such as:

1. Record segments, whenever you want, in any order you want.
2. Import music, sound effects, and spoken-word recordings.
3. Rearrange and edit show content for professional results.
4. Preview your show on your PC or your portable audio player.
5. Publish your show to a website, with full RSS, XML and HTML support.

As you can see quite the little package!

A free MP3 converter is available at LAME. It is an LGPL MP3 encoder. An open source development model and highly evolved MP3 encoder, with quality and speed able to rival state of the art commercial encoders.

If you want to add descriptions to the MP3 files so that your listeners can identify your podcast then the free software at ID3-Tagit seems the way to go.

The only thing that you will have to control is what you want to say on your podcast. It makes sense to have your dialog all worked out before you record, that way it will sound professional. The only thing left to do is upload to your favorite podcast directory. Blogger lets you upload to your Web log and you can also submit to directories such as iTunes, Yahoo and iPodder. Give it a couple of days and there you have it, your in the directory!!!

Have fun
